Windows ME Problems
Windows ME was launched in the year 2000, ME is an acronym for Millennium Edition and is a hybrid 16-bit and available as a 32-bit graphical operating system as well. PCWorld declared Windows ME as the fourth "Worst Tech Product of All Time” because of the number of technical issues in the year 2006.
Some of the problems are listed below-
- After installation of Windows ME the hardware doesn’t respond correctly, Sorting this problem is easy, right-click on “My Computer” icon, the next thing is to select Properties, and then the Device Manager tab. Review the list and identify the device that seems to have a problem, then update it by inserting the Windows ME installation CD-ROM and choose Automatic Search. Windows ME will find a different driver on the CD-ROM, and will show it to the user and ask for permission to install it, accordingly select YES or NO.
- The next problem is with the IntelliPoint Mouse after upgrading to ME. The problem might be with the configuration of the mouse option or after installation the software gives the following error message “This program does not run correctly on this version of Windows”
- Another issue is that upgrading to Windows ME causes the old software’s to be sent to the recycle bin and sometimes do not function as well. Upgrading is the solution to this and it is not necessarily free.
- Windows ME users at times experience no response from AOL after 10 to 15 minutes when started. This is because of certain modems that use the new WDM (Windows Driver Model) that is provided with ME.
Some users have also faced problems when performing other functions like deletion, restoring etc. They are listed below
- The problem that a user faced is with the _RESTORE folder on the C drive. After restoring the back up data the restore folder had approximately 2GB of data and after running Norton Antivirus a virus was found which could not be deleted nor quarantine. The _RESTORE folder is a system folder and is restricted; although this problem was solved with tech support the user was not happy about it.
- The other problem that a user has faced as well was that during deletion of large amount of files, Windows ME froze and had to be rebooted.
Another constant problem that ME users have to deal with is Error messages. Some of the error messages that users have to deal with are
- When playing a QuickTime video file on Windows Media Player that is a built-in component of Windows ME the decompressor messages keep popping up. One is "Unable to download the appropriate decompressor" and the other is "Cannot play back the video stream: no suitable decompressor could be found." This is due to the incompatibility between Windows Media Player and the video files by Quick Time.
- There can also be problems with the password file receiving either of the two messages which are MPREXE not responding" or "MPREXE has caused an Invalid Page Fault in Kernel32.dll." will help in determining this.
