Media Player Problem

Media players are software tools that are used to play multimedia files; with a number of media players available each support a variety of formats. There are an array of media players available in the market, from inbuilt media player in Windows, Quicktime Player pre loaded in Mac OS X, and others like RealPlayer, MediaMonkey, Foobar2000, etc. Most of them are compatible with all operating systems supporting either audio or video and a few that support both. Considering that Microsoft is the world leader in providing Operating systems, their inbuilt Windows Media Player(WMP) would as well be most used. Though it has unique functions, and convenient to use it has a few flaws of its own. Some of the problems of Windows Media Player are listed below-
  • Windows Media play keeps buffering, and this causes irritating breaks in the while playing audio files. This could happen because the Internet connection is too slow or temporary Internet connection problems due to congestion.
  • At times, WMP does not play, the buttons gray out and WMP shows the file is playing but there is no audio. Microsoft has acknowledged this problem.
  • The audio infrequently may skip, slow down, or fast forward during playback. The solution for this can be resolved at Abacast.
  • WMP 11 due to Digital Rights Management (DRM) on certain files closes Weedshare. Weedshare is a music distribution site that is home to ten thousand musicians and millions of music tracks.
  • Another problem is that WMP has a major privacy problem, Microsoft tracks where all movies, tracks etc played on WMP.
  • There is also a security problem in WMP versions 9 and 10, which allows hackers to run illegal software that leads to a Denial of Service attack.
There are other miniscule problems as well that can be solved using technical support provided by Microsoft.

Players like RealOne Player by Real Networks also have security issues, leading to buffer overun attacks. However Real Netwroks has issued patches that closes nine secueity holes. Even Winamp has its share of problems, with a bug that can be exploited to install spyaware on the the PC which is using this media player. Nullsoft, has released a patch to fix this problem as well and urges user to update it.

Other problems that users have to face with media player are-
  • No volume control
  • The volume is set to high by default instead of medium or low.
  • The media file begins to play on the page load.
  • A common feature like double clicking to use the full screen feature is not available with the media player
  • Moving directly to a certain time marker is not possible.
  • The media starts from the beginning instead of playing from where it was paused.
  • Does not download certain formats easy, though it can play them
  • The controls of the player and the overall use are very confusing.
In all there is no such thing as the perfect “media player”, it all depends on the user preference. The results of a poll show that media players that are not so well known which have however been put together rank number one, followed by Jet Audio at number 2 and WMP at number 3. The results can be viewed at Wilders Security for a detailed idea.
