Compaq PCs Errors and Problems
There are various models of compact computers available in the market today. There are a wide range of Compaq laptops available too. Occasionally, hardware problems such as, boot errors, security problems, etc. do occur. We shall take a look at a few of these errors and problems in this article with the various models of Compaq Presarios.
Boot Problems:
The Compaq 2240 has a problem of getting frozen at the startup. The computer appears to be dead after the BIOS beep and does not boot in Windows. This happens because the boot option is not set to the Hard Drive. You need press ESC on startup to enter the boot menu. The boot menu will provide you with options to boot from either the CD ROM, Hard Drive or any other removable devices attached to your computer. Set the boot device as the Hard Drive i.e. make sure the arrow is placed next to the Hard Drive option. On restart the machine should boot normally in to Windows.
The Compaq 1234 model has a common problem of showing the shutdown screen at startup. The machine will display the ”It is now safe to turn your computer off”. The file “watchdog.exe” causes this problem. To avoid the screen to boot to the shut down screen remove all the power sources from the laptop. On restarting the machine the problem should be solved. Compaq has come up with the updated version of “watchdog.exe” and the updates should be available at Compaq.
CD and DVD ROM errors:
The Compaq 2254 has a problem of not displaying the CD ROM in Windows (and not in My Computer). To solve this problem you need to enter into the BIOS setup by pressing F10 at the startup. Once the screen displays the BIOS menu press F9 and then press Enter followed by F10 and then Enter again. This process will reset the settings to default. On restarting the machine you should be able to view the CD ROM in Windows.
The Compaq 4660 Presario has the problem of getting locked up sometimes while it is playing a DVD. This problem is only found with the machines available with the “COMPAQ SR – 8582 DVD ROM” drive. If your machine is fitted with this DVD ROM and is giving the problem mentioned above you need download the upgrade; fix – SP6311.
Security Problems:
Some of the Compaq machines equipped with Windows 98 have a backdoor that causes a security hole in Internet Explorer 4. The backdoor works in combination with a Java applet supplied by Compaq. This hole in the security can cause any outsider to have access to the Hard Drive. The outsider can execute Windows and DOS. This is a serious problem as the outsider can enter a virus, delete files, steal private information, etc.
Hard Drive Errors:
Sometimes the Compaq Presario especially the 1060 notebooks displays an error message showing that there has been an Hard Drive even when the Hard Drive is in good condition. To avoid this message from appearing all the time you need to download a patch file named SP4979.
