Clean Sweep

There are times when a computer experiences 'over clocking', which slows down its background tasks and processes. The continuous adding and removal of programs can lead to the cramping of fragmented files on the hard drive that occupy space. Many applications connected to the Internet undergo self-execution and are running in the Systray. Promotional or shareware files that accompany software packages or associated files hamper processor clocking speed and create unnecessary file clusters.

You can give your computer a clean sweep by doing away with unnecessary programs; formatting the hard drive, and installing the programs you need and want. Devoid of all the waste and buildup, your computer will run more efficiently, giving you the maximum reach of the system.

It is a common thing to fill hard drive space with productivity programs, or files, like video clips, digital photos, and music.

Removing programs is quite easy. There are many new computer users who believe that these programs can be deleted by just deleting their shortcut icon from the desktop. However, this of no use, as the icon is just a shortcut to the program that is comprised of numerous files. Don't forget, you could do damage to the computers performance by removing a complete program folder you think you don't need.

Given below is a general procedure followed to easily and safely remove unused or old programs from a Windows XP-based computer. This is procedure is also valid for older versions of Windows.
  • Determine programs to be purged
Identify extra programs and the ones you don't need. Make sure you keep programs that are regularly used, as it's not tough to easy to turn into a digital packrat. List programs you need and ones you can remove.
  • Back to the "Start"
One of the easiest ways for removing a program from the hard drive is to find the 'uninstall' or 'remove option' from the program's group. Simply, click on the Start menu, go to Program Files and choose the program you like to uninstall.
When you are in the program group, you will see the program launch icon, a ReadMe file, and, an option that allows you to uninstall or remove the program from the system. Click on this option and follow the instructions of the onscreen wizard for safely removing the program from the computer. You may have to restart the PC. Restart the system only after closing all the applications open for avoiding losing any data.
  • Under "Control"
Browse the program list, but leave the ones you are not sure of. Keep in mind that you may have to use Microsoft Word frequently so don't uninstall Microsoft Office, since Word is part of it. You may be new to some programs, but they are needed for another program to run-a suggested guideline would be to disregard it, especially if the program doesn't occupy extra space on the hard drive. One can identify the size of the program on the right-hand side of the program name. You can leave adwares or spywares for the respective feature to detect and remove it safely.
