CD drivers errors

There are a lot of CD ROM manufacturers in the market. Most of them provide the drivers for the CD ROM with the pack. These manufacturers have some drivers of their own while some are common. The drivers for the CD drive depend on the CD ROM attached to the computer. There are a number of errors people face with the drivers related to a CD ROM (Compact Disc Read Only Memory). The drivers of the CD ROM need to be loaded properly in the Autoexec.bat / Config.sys.

Errors will occur if the manufacturer places additional switches on the CD ROM line in the config.sys. Manufacturers typically do this, as these switches may be required at times for the smooth functioning of CD ROM. These switches cause errors with other drivers. Temporarily remove the switches and check if the CD ROM functions properly. Errors will also occur if the LOADHIGH command or DEVICEHIGH is placed with spaces within the lines. The computer does not load the lines if the spaces are present and causes the errors. If the LOADHIGH and DEVICEHIGH commands are properly present then make sure that the computer is loading the memory manager i.e. EMM386.exe and HIMEM.SYS. If there isn't enough memory to load the manager than one shall receive an error stating that memory isn't enough. Clear up memory if such an error pops up.

One of the most common errors people face with CD ROM drivers is the "Not enough drive letters available". This error could occur if the LASTDRIVE is missing. The error also occurs if the less number of letters are specified for the CD ROM to load in. To avoid this error enter LASTDRIVE=Z prior to the CD ROM driver line in config.sys.

Some of the errors appear while accessing the CD ROM drive. The most critical ones are CDR 101 and the CDR 102 errors. Let us see the causes and ways to troubleshoot these errors. The CDR 101 error occurs if there is a problem with the driver or the hardware. There is a strong possibility that the drivers are loaded properly in autoexec.bat/ config.sys. Update the drivers regularly. Use a boot disc that consists of CD ROM support and load the drivers again. If the drivers are loaded properly then there is a strong chance that it is a hardware failure. Before jumping to any conclusions one must check the cables are properly and are not loosely connected to the CD ROM. Check the connections at both ends i.e. the CD ROM end and the motherboard end. The CDR 102 error is caused mostly because of the software driver problem. To avoid this error delete "/ e " from mscdex.exe. Check if emm386.exe is set to "auto" in autoexec if no then is set it by entering "/ auto" at the end of the emm386 line within the config.sys.

Most users consider MSCD0001 or MSCD001 to be a driver. One should note that MSCD0001 is not a driver but it's a common name of the driver. In other words, when the driver gets successfully loaded on the system the driver will be saved by the name MSCD0001 or MSCD001. This is done to make it easier for MSCDEX to find the drivers instead doing guesswork. The MSCDEX is programmed to search for the MSCD0001 or MSCD001.
