ccApp Error Message

The ccApp.exe is linked with Syamntec's Norton Antivirus and plays an integral role in running auto-protect and email scrutiny facility. The file is an acronym for common client application, and without this file Norton Antivirus cannot function properly. This is not a Windows system file, and is located in the C:\Program Files\Common Files subfolder. Symantec says: "ccApp.exe is the common hosting application that is used by both Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security. It calls the different program features in Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security. For example, in Norton AntiVirus, if Auto-Protect and Email Scanning are enabled, then ccApp.exe makes sure that those programs are running. If ccApp is disabled, then Auto-Protect and Email Scanning will not run." The ccApp.exe error message that users face is in the following format when they try to shut down their computer-
  • "End Program ccApp.exe"
  • After hitting the end button, it displays 'ending program' with a countdown.
  • When the countdown is completed it displays another screen that says "The program is not responding'. Messages like these keeping popping up till it shuts down by after a while.
  • Some users have the patience to wait for 5 to 10 mins, while some just cut the power and shut it down.
This error message is not critical, and does not affect the running of any software. It is only a problem with the shutting down of the system, as it tries to shut down a number of programs at one time. It takes up a lot of CPU usage and could be a problem with the processor. The capp.exe file is causes errors messages frequently on Win XP, which has Norton AV, installed on it. Another error that the capp.exe cause is that it makes defragmentation by windows disc defragmenter not possible due to sporadic disk writing.

A former Symantec Helpdesk Consultant had concluded that the error is caused because of a conflict between the timings during start up of application on the system where the .dll file is loaded. Another reason is because of a flawed installation of Norton Antivirus.

The use of ccApp.exe is a bad implementation by Symantec and is as big a problem as the problems it is designed to protect against. A solution to this is only to wait until this host file, ccApp.exe shuts down the applications that are running. The wait is even longer when shut down takes place, especially if the start up was incomplete after the previous shut down. Also another way to deal with this error is to completely uninstall it and reinstall it again, or use another anti-virus.

Just removing the file without uninstalling NV causes a number of problems like not connecting to the Internet, unsecured connection and instability of the computer, etc.
