Browser Updates
If the user is uncertain about which version of the browser is being used, this can be done by,
If using Internet Explorer:
- Selecting the Help menu
- Click on the About Internet Explorer
If using Netscape:
- Select Help
- Click on the About Communicator option.
Following any of these will inform the user on the version of the browser that has been installed on the computer. With regard to Firefox, it is best to keep it updated and have the latest version. This is for mainly two important reasons-
- The updates fro browsers generally have hot fixes to correct flaws in the security of the older versions. So having the latest update reduces the risk in being attacked by viruses.
- The second reason to keep the browser updated with latest version is that it will have the latest enhancements and features that can be for the users benefit.
The update mechanism of Firefox is integrated in the browser itself and the configuration can adjusted as per the users requirement. The steps to change the configuration are simple and can be done in this method:
- Click open the Tools Tab in the Firefox Window,
- When the box drops down, go to the Options menu
- The dialog box of the Options box can be seen after clicking on it.
- Select the Advance option, which has a number of tabs.
- The tab that is named Update can be selected to check for updates.
If the manual update is too time consuming and has to be repeated again and again after regular periods. Firefox can be set to check for updates automatically.
The Updates tab has a section labeled 'Automatically check for Updates' that has three options:
- Firefox
- Installed Add-ons
- Search Engines.
These options are activated by default. The first option of Firefox when selected will keep checking on the Internet if there is an update whenever it is launched. Installed Add-ons is a feature that checks for updates for any of the add-ons that have been installed on the system. The Search engine looks for updates to the integrated Search engines in Firefox.
The Update Tab has a section 'When updates to Firefox are found'; this feature characterizes the behavior of Firefox when the updates to Firefox, add-ons and search engines are found. In this section there are check boxes like one is 'Ask me what I want to do' which is not a default section but prompts the user on what action needs to be taken each time the update is found. Its best to keep this option not activated because it gets quite annoying at times. The other option is 'Automatically download and install the update' and this is checked by default and is best left this way since the updates are downloaded and installed silently.
The Update History can also be seen at the 'Show Update History' and complete detailed information on updates applied in the past can be seen.
