Browser Problems

Browser based applications are widely used by many. The main reasons for this being their ability to communicate on the Internet and also because there is no need for them to be installed on each and every computer as long as they are uploaded on the server

There are a few common problems that users face when using a browser, some of them being:
  • When using Microsoft® Internet Explorer you are not allowed to use a different certificate till you open a new browser. A simple solution provided for this is to begin a new browser session for Internet explorer.
  • The Explorer does not show all the client or users certificates that are selectable in the selection list. They only show the certificates that are issued by CA, which is a secure site. The certificate must be registered in the database as well as by the application used. The user has to ensure that the PC is signed on in order to use the browser with the same user name, which is on the certificate. The administrator has to make sure that the certificate is registered even when using another PC.
  • The browser denies the connection for the HTTPS. This is because the browser configuration experiences a problem. The browser fails to establish a connection either because the site is using a self-signed certificate for the system or other reasons.
  • Anyone can use Javascript to examine your browser history and all communication via GET. This is possible in Netscape if and when JAVA is enabled. This script can easily be used in HTML documents and emails that are used read using Netscape. In these cases it is best to disable the JavaScript unless you are certain of the credibility of the page.
  • When Java is turned on while using Netscape, then an applet can be used to disable the security on the browser, which allows the applet to read, write or delete files on the machine. Again the solution is to disable the JavaScript unless you are sure of the credibility of the page.
  • Warnings about the threat of compromised websites and browser loopholes have been presented by the US Computer Emergency Response Center (Cert), and the Internet Storm Center. Cert has stated that the users should be aware that any website, even those that may be trusted by the user, may be affected by this activity and thus contain potentially malicious code. The Internet Storm Center said that the users should if possible use a browser other then MS Internet Explorer until the current vulnerabilities in MSIE are patched.
