What causes application octet stream problem?

In computer science the bit is the primary unit of measurement, having the value of a 1 or a 0.  When 8 bits are joined together they create a unit called a byte, also known as an octet which can range in value from 0 to 255.  These bigger 8 bit units are used to access information storage through memory addressing systems.  These bytes of data are accessed as a group in a time series pattern commonly known as a byte stream, this too is also known as an octet stream due to the size of the bytes.

Although octets are regularly used in an interchangeable way with the term bytes, they are not exactly the same thing.  In fact the term octet came into use because they are not the same, as some older computer networks did not always use to represent a byte as 8 bits.  There was no standardisation of the byte when these terms were made which is why we now have two terms that can be used to represent the same thing most all of the time.

One common problem for the end Internet user today is when they have to suffer an application octet stream problem.  This problem occurs when the user tries to open a MIME attachment in their email program or other application.  MIME stands for Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extensions that have been developed to extend the capabilities of email to go beyond regular ASCI text files.  Application octet stream problems arise when the user tries to open a file with the application/octet stream extension that they are unable to open in their email program or on the World Wide Web.  Whatever kind of file it may be, the octet stream application will not generally open in a normal email program as it is a binary file which needs to be linked to a program that can read its extension.

Octet stream problems are problems of association that occur when your computer is trying to open a file but doesn't have the available program to do it.  Instead of opening into the file in the way it was saved which is linked to the program it was saved in, it instead exists as a binary file that is not attached to any specific program and that is in most ways useless to the end user until it can be successfully associated.

It can be useful to think of programs and the data that they generate as a kind of flow, like electricity.  First the electricity needs to be input into the system, or the file needs to be created and saved; then it needs to travel along the power lines in a common format that can exist with all of the other electricity doing the same thing, like octets of data.  Finally when the data reaches its destination it needs to be linked up with something that can read it, this is analogous to an electrical appliance, or a program that can read the particular file extension.

Application octet stream problems arise when the end user is unable to view application octet stream files and turn the bytes or octets of information into the original formatting of the sent files.
