What causes 0x800ccc92 error?

If you’ve ever encountered a 0x800ccc92 error while using Outlook Express, you’ve probably been mislead by the context of the error message itself. This error typically comes with a note that your password has been rejected, or is no longer valid. Now assuming that you have in fact entered the correct password, this can lead to no end of confusion and frustration.

You’ll no doubt be pleased to learn, then, that the problem doesn’t arise through any fault of your own. Rather it’s the result of a bug created between the uses of two Microsoft products. Yes, Microsoft is the reason for your 0x800ccc92 woes! The two products in question are Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and Outlook Express itself.

To complicate matters as only Microsoft can, the 0x800ccc92 error is triggered in Outlook Express but it actually occurs due to a configuration fault in the framework of Exchange Server. This problem is believed to be apparent only in the 2000 version of Exchange Server. If you are using an older or newer version, it’s unlikely that you will be suffering from a conventional 0x800ccc92 error. In that case, you may want to check for the correct drivers and that your email settings are correct.

You may also receive the following text in your error log:

Source: POP3SVC
Category: Content Engine
Event ID: 1023
Error 0x800cce21 occurred while rendering message 0001-000000003b4d for download for user aissd3u000000@STOREDRIVERDOM.StoreDriverOrg.com.

If this is the case, it seems that you are definitely suffering from the much documented conflict between Outlook Express and Exchange Server 2000. Microsoft, to their credit, have acted on the known bug and fixed things up in their service pack edition. You will need to upgrade to Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 to sort things out though.

The Service Pack should resolve any password refusal errors that were occurring in Outlook Express, while providing welcome additional functionality to its native product.

The error itself occurs when you try to directly access your Post Office Protocol (POP3) email server. This is something that you would only normally do to retrieve messages and any items that have been stored on the server. But of course, without this functionality, we don’t have much use for Outlook Express!

More recently, there has been discussion that the 0x800ccc92 error may have branched out to become more of a general related problem when a system is exposed to viruses and spyware. Some viruses have been known to affect the core functionality of connecting to an email server and if they spread harmfully, this can lead to a scrambled password and the repeated 0x800ccc92 errors that will render Outlook unusable.

Some people have reported that it’s possible to uninstall Exchange Server completely and re-install it to remedy the problem, but this isn’t 100% foolproof. It does, however, point to the fact that some of the shared library files between the two products may become corrupt thus leading to a situation where the 0x800ccc92 error might arise. These corruptions can be basic Windows registry entries, or simply conflicting configurations in the software.
